AS/A Level

This course is spent studying Mathematical Methods (Pure Mathematics), Mechanics and Statistics.

In mathematics a few of the topics studied at GCSE will be reconsidered at A level to a greater level of understanding, but in general students will be studying mostly new topics and a much wider syllabus.

Most of the Mathematics studied at GCSE is Pure Mathematics, but students at A level will follow a course which includes both Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Mechanics and Statistics). It will be assumed that pupils will be able to use the mathematical background and expertise developed during GCSE as a working part of mathematical knowledge. Ideally pupils considering A level Mathematics will have followed the Higher Tier course at GCSE.

Students will be following the WJEC's assessment scheme for the following modules:

AS Unit 1: Pure Mathematics A

Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes 25% of qualification: 120 marks

AS Unit 2: Applied Mathematics A (Statistics and Mechanics)

A2 Unit 3: Pure Mathematics B

Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes 35% of qualification: 120 marks

A2 Unit 4: Applied Mathematics B (Statistics and Mechanics)

Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes 25% of qualification: 80 marks
