AS/A Level
This is a two-year course, preparing pupils for four final exams and one course work piece. Assessment will be based on the outcome of both the course work piece and examination performance.
AS: Year 12 Course summary:
Pupils will prepare for 2 examinations in the summer each worth 20% of the overall A level grade.
Unit 1: 2 hour examination (closed book)

Section A: Prose pre-1900
Pupils will study a novel and explore the writer’s attitudes and values, consider the potential influences of cultures and contexts and aim to offer a variety of interpretations.

Section B: Drama
Pupils will study one drama which deals with fairly weighty issues and provides plenty of opportunity for debate.
Unit 2: 1½ hour examination (open book)
Poetry post-1900

Section A: Critical analysis of one poem taken from the collection studied.

Section B: Comparison of the two selected poetry texts.

Section B: Essay question based on the play studied.
Unit 5: Course Work
One 2500-3500 word assignment based on the reading of two prose texts from different periods, one pre-2000 and one post-2000, accounting for 20% of the overall A level grade.
