PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni’s public speaking team succeeded in a recent Welsh speaking Rotary Club semi-final and won high praise from the notable judges. The team will compete in the national final in Llanelli before Christmas.

A memorable evening of competing was recently held in the school’s library. Ten teams from Welsh medium secondary schools in South Wales travelled to the school and the packed audience marvelled at the exceptionally high standard of public speaking.

Among the topics discussed were current state of affairs and debates including the validity of the Welsh Assembly government, the morality of IVF treatment, corporal punishment, the future of the Royal Family while Ysgol Gyfun y Strade from Llanelli naturally debated that moving the home of the town’s famous rugby side away from Stradey Park would be a mistake.

The winning teams included Ysgol Glan Taf from Cardiff who debated the effectiveness of the Welsh language Act. Ysgol Rhydywaun from Aberdare discussed creating a privatized Welsh health service while euthanasia was debated by the team from Ysgol Ystalyfera, Swansea.

The Ysgol Cwm Rhymni team, who debated the influence of the mass media on young people today, were represented by three pupils from year 12. Geraint Huws chaired the debate forcefully while Heledd Brooks-Jones and Bethan Foweraker were the speakers for and against the issue. Both girls spoke forcefully and gained valuable experience speaking in front of a packed audience.

The pupils won distinguished praise from the judges and will eagerly anticipate the national final held in Llanelli later this month.

Best wishes to the team in the national final!
