OLD SHOES PAVE SUCCESS FOR CWM RHYMNI STUDENTS

Pupils at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni have celebrated success in a nationwide business enterprise competition. Over 7,000 teams and more than 38,000 students from across the United Kingdom competed in the Make your Mark Challenge to win prize money for themselves and their school during Enterprise Week 2007. The exciting competition was arranged providing young people in the UK with an opportunity to turn business ideas into reality.

Sixth form Business Studies students Kate Rowlands, Shaunna Barnett, Ewan Bartlett and Mia Lock were delighted to discover that their enterprise was chosen and that they progressed to the Grand Final in London. The four lucky winners from Cwm Rhymni spent a night at the Cumberland hotel in London and dined in the exclusive restaurant of famous chef Gary Rhodes.

The one day challenge required entrants to design an enterprise idea that would have an impact on the world around them. The Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni team put forward a business plan that encompassed an innovative way of selling shoes. Their company labelled 1 shoe 3 intended to sell shoes in a groundbreaking fashion. All shoes would be sold on a 10% discount basis if customers donated old but wearable shoes to the shop. Those old shoes would then be sent to people in developing and third world countries. The business plan was hurriedly faxed to the judges in London along with an outline of the idea, cost figures and also marketing strategies.

Team member Kate Rowlands said, “Having watched television programmes such as Dragons Den and The Apprentice we realized that we needed to devise an idea that wasn’t hair-brained, ridiculous but credible. I believe our idea is actually so good that someone with enough money should seriously think about and start a business. The more we worked together on the plan the more we realized that we were discussing a realistic business proposal. We thoroughly enjoyed competing in the final and finding out what business plans the other nine teams have offered.” Although the Cwm Rhymni team weren’t successful this time in the Grand Final the students were praised for their excellent website creation, press release and finally their pitch to the huge audience that had gathered in the main banqueting suite of the hotel.

Amanda Percy, Head of Business Studies at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni added, “We are thrilled with the success of the students. They worked extremely well on the plan and being a one day competition good teamwork and communication skills were essential. The students worked well in the final and obviously enjoyed the fine dining experience at the Gary Rhodes restaurant!”

The school celebrated the Enterprise week with many exciting competitions. Several different logo competitions were held that succeeded in creating an enterprise culture.
